Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), India’s largest manufacturer of mining and construction equipment, has introduced the country’s first 205-tonne dump truck.

The 205T Electric Drive Rear Dump Truck (BH205-E) was developed as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Make in India” initiative, which urges companies to manufacture their products in India.

The massive and innovative BH205-E will help satisfy India’s rapidly growing demand for higher capacity equipment in the mining industry. It is earmarked for use in the project of Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), Singrauli.

NCL Chairman P.K. Sinha and BEML Chairman Deepak Kumar Hota were both present to unveil the new machine at an event on the BEML company campus, during which dignitaries were taken for rides in the new truck so that they could experience its engineering first-hand.

The event came only a month after BEML Mysuru delivered India’s first 150-tonne payload capacity dump truck, the BH150-E, to the South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) for its Gevra project.

“The dump truck is a tribute to the Make in India initiative from the BEML, its officers and staff,” Hota commented after the launch, adding that the occasion marked another milestone for BEML.

Sinha, meanwhile, stated that 14 percent of equipment used for mining operations at NCL are supplied by BEML. He said NCL’s annual coal production has increased to 100 million tonnes from 62 million tonnes. The partnership with BEML, he added, has been instrumental in helping NCL attain its goals.

Powered by a Tier-II emission compliant electronic engine with 2300HP, the BH205-E is designed for large-scale mining operations. The AC drive system is engineered to deliver enhanced haul road performance with reduced maintenance.

The BH205-E weighs 335 tonnes when fully loaded. Maneuverability is improved by a power-steering system and short turning radius. Other notable features include an ergonomically designed dash board and a tiltable telescopic steering wheel.
