Caterpillar Inc. (Cat) is the world’s largest manufacturer of construction machinery. A Fortune 100 company, Cat designs, engineers, produces and sells a broad range of equipment, totaling over 300 machines.
Included in Cat’s extensive product line are excavators, dozers, compact and multi-terrain loaders, articulated trucks, skid steer loaders, backhoe loaders and utility vehicles. The company also offers power systems as well as numerous attachments and parts. Cat products are distributed via a vast network of dealers numbering well over 200 and spanning the entire globe.
Cat was founded in 1925 as the Caterpillar Tractor Company, when the Holt Manufacturing Company merged with the C.L. Best Tractor Company. The company was rebranded in 1986 as Caterpillar Inc. It is currently headquartered in Deerfield, Illinois.
Over the course of its history, Cat has expanded through the acquisition of dozens of companies, including the Progress Rail Services Corporation, Electro-Motive Diesel Inc., Bucyrus International Inc. and Pyroban Group Ltd.
According to the company’s website, in 2017 Cat did a total of $45.462 billion in sales and revenue, making it “the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives.”

As of 2018 Cat maintains over 100 manufacturing plants around the world, with 51 located in the United States and 59 situated abroad.
