Freightliner Trucks is an American truck manufacturer based in Portland, Oregon. Founded in 1942, the company’s fleet includes on-highway trucks, medium and severe duty trucks, and natural gas trucks.
According to the company website, “Freightliner is the best-selling brand of heavy-duty trucks in North America, and we remain dedicated to producing trucks engineered with business owners and professional truck drivers in mind. We build trucks designed to deliver results that build businesses and grow bottom lines.”
Following World War II, during which Freightliner halted normal production to assist the war effort, the company transferred its headquarters to Portland, Oregon, and resumed its manufacture of heavy duty trucks. In 1958 it introduced the world’s first 90-degree tilt cab which greatly simplified maintenance by allowing for easy access to the engine.
Freightliner’s flagship model—the Powerliner—was released in 1973, with a 600 HP engine. The following year the company completed production of its 100,000th truck.
Freightliner continued to innovate throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s and into the 21st century, producing trucks with better fuel economy, added payload, improved safety features and increased productivity.
Currently, Freighliner offers a wide range of models tailored for numerous applications including, but not limited to, dump trucks, food and beverage, pickup and delivery, refuse service, tanker, utility and towing and recovery. It also offers a variety of parts, accessories and services.
Its expansive network of dealers includes more than 700 full service locations.
