Sumitomo Construction Machinery traces its roots back to 1963. It is headquartered in Tokyo. The company began selling mechanical excavators and mechanical truck cranes in 1964 under the SUMITOMO-Link Belt brand. Three years later it began selling hydraulic excavators.
In 1976 Sumitomo Construction Machinery’s hydraulic excavators were introduced to the US market via the FMC Corporation. In 1991 the company entered the European market following a partnership with JCB.
The company’s flagship excavator, the LEGEST, received the Good Design Award in 2007. The next year it received the Grand Award for Energy Conservation from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
In 2014 an update of the SH200-6 hydraulic excavator—an update of the LEGEST—won the Energy Conserving Machinery Award, given out by the Japan Machinery Federation.
Sumitomo Construction Machinery prioritizes environmental sustainability. According to the company’s president:
“In product development, SCM has launched eco-products, cutting-edge hybrid excavators, and ICT-equipped construction machinery. In the manufacturing area, we have focused on efforts relating to the significant reduction of CO2 emissions at our plants, as well as the overall decrease in the volume of waste. Finally, in sales, we have made progress in our Eco-Shop activities.”
Sumitomo’s excavator line includes more than a dozen models. Its dealer network spans the entire globe.
