Hidromek HICON 7W electric excavator wins German Design Award

Hidromek, one of Turkey’s leading manufacturers of construction equipment, has won the German Design Award 2020 for its HICON 7W, a fully electric wheel excavator. The German Design Award Competition, which recognizes the most innovative and successful designs introduced in a variety of markets, is among the most prestigious design awards in the world.

The HICON 7W was unveiled in April at the annual Bauma construction equipment trade fair, marking one of the most impressive entries into the quickly-growing market of electric construction machinery.

Hidromek engineered the machine “with [the] aim of specializing in electric vehicles of the future.”

“[The] smart and ecofriendly HİCON 7 W was developed as a 100% electric city excavator in line with this purpose,” the company states. “HİCON 7 W, reducing environmental impact with its zero emission, can be easily used with its compact dimensions in many corners of the city.
“HICON stores its energy in new generation Lithium-ion batteries. It uses its energy 97% efficiently due to its electric motor. It spends less energy than the vehicles with conventional diesel engines. Thus, its maintenance costs are also much lower than the others.”

The HICON 7W features Hidromek’s “Environmental Safety System,” which helps the machine adapt to urban environments and inclement weather using a rear information screen that communicates with the operator.

The HICON 7W employs a lithium ion battery that can be fully charged in three hours; there is also a quick charge option that takes anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes. Fully charged, the HICON 7W can be operated for eight hours. It has an operating weight of 7700 kg, a rated power of 47 kW, and a max travel speed of 30 km/h.

The HICON 7W is not the first Hidromek machine to win the German Design Award. It won last year for its HMK 640 WL wheel loader, and received a Special Mention in 2017 for its HMK 600 MG motor grader.
