Did you know Caterpillar Inc. (Cat) has an app? Called Cat Inspect, its purpose is to make the process of inspecting machines more convenient for customers and dealers, with the ultimate goal of reducing instances of machine failure and downtime. Cat described the app in a recent press release:
“Our app allows customers to download and complete Caterpillar and user-defined inspections, with the option to include additional information such as images, comments and ratings for their entire fleet. Customers can also identify preventative maintenance needs, complete daily safety walkarounds and customized inspections with their smartphones.”
According to Cat, the app was used to complete more than 1 million inspections in 2019. And over half of those inspections gave rise to a recommended action from the manufacturer, meaning the app successfully detects issues before they come to a head.
“Roughly 90% of machine failure are preventable through regular inspections, timely service and wear part replacement,” explained Brandon Lynn, Program Consultant for Caterpillar. “Digital inspections provide real-time information for our customers that they can review, retain or even print to help that will aid their business decisions.”
Cat Inspect is part of the company’s strategy to improve its services. As Barron’s reports, in 2016 Cat set an ambitious goal for itself: double service revenue by 2026 (from $14 billion to $28 billion).
Ogi Redzic, Cat’s chief digital officer, told the publication that his division has hired over 150 new employees this year, bringing the total to more than 600.
“We have a strong analytics team that’s actually today giving recommendations to dealers and customers around the world,” Redzic said.
Cat is the world’s largest manufacturer of construction equipment. Its extensive product line includes excavators, dozers, compact and multi-terrain loaders, articulated trucks, skid steer loaders, backhoe loaders and utility vehicles. The company also offers power systems as well as numerous attachments and parts.
